Walking around Florence, faces tilted upwards, looking for the tears of San Lorenzo
Once you have been refreshed by the luxurious welcome at Palazzo Castri, you can set off on an evening walk to enjoy the Florentine sky at night. We recommend a trip to the Oltrarno, on the other side of the river. Walk from the Uffizi Gallery towards the Ponte Vecchio. Cross over to the other side of the river. As you walk along the River Arno you will be enchanted by the colours and reflected lights that create a picture postcard landscape.
After crossing the Ponte Vecchio with its historic workshops, turn left and continue walking until you reach Piazzale Michelangelo. Here you will be able to enjoy a famously breathtaking panoramic view of Florence. Not far away the terrace lights illuminate la Piana dei Giullari, a hilly area adjacent to the street of the same name. A little further on and you will come to Impruneta, where you will find the most luxurious villas in Florence. But we are not interested in earthly grandeur, but in the sky. Now it is time to look upwards, make our wish and find a shooting star that will carry our wish away with it.
A meteor shower
Piazzale Michelangelo, the Giardino delle Rose, Ponte Vecchio and Santa Trinita Bridge are thought to be the most romantic places in Florence, and it is only right that they should be the starting point for our search for shooting stars. But if you have lots of wishes to be granted and you want to enjoy a larger-scale sky with your beloved, then we recommend a trip just outside Florence.
The Bellosguardo hill lives up to its name, offering a unique, perfect panorama. Fiesole welcomes visitors to its medieval centre for a journey back in time. Are the stars medieval too? Do you want to touch the sky with your finger? Go up Monte Morello, 934 metres above sea level. Here you will certainly enjoy a shower... of shooting stars.
Art Stars
The most amazing star to be seen in Florence cannot be a shooting star because it is not in the sky at all. It is on the earth and is 100% natural and alive. It is Dante’s Star and was inaugurated in June during the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the poet’s death. It was created in the San Donato Park in the Novoli district.
The star is formed of 50 willow oaks, each of which is 6 metres high and 30 years old. It covers 180 square metres, is visible on Google Earth, and changes colour depending on the seasons. Designer Felice Limosani was inspired by the great poet Dante and the the stars mentioned in the cantos of the Divine Comedy: Inferno - “and so we came out to see the stars once more”; Purgatory - “pure and ready to climb to the stars”; Paradiso - “the love that moves the sun and the other stars”.
